Grade 8 Christian Education-Ethics
This Week:
General Class info:
Description- The 8th Grade Christian Ed. class at Bethany focuses on ethics. Values are essential to our common lives, and a person of integrity is one who not only holds values but also acts on them. Further, it is vital in diverse community that we learn to find common ground and still value and accept differences. To help our students become people of integrity who are open to others, we will begin by exploring our own values and the sources of those values (family, school, faith, culture). We will also take a look at basic ethical systems (relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, situational ethics, virtue ethics, natural law, divine command, etc.) Finally we will seek to practice our values by creating and leading a service project with and for the Bethany community.
Participation and engagement in class discussions is very important to this course and a big part of the final grade. Remember, there are no “wrong” questions or opinions. Every student’s individual contribution to our lesson will be highly and equally valued.
In addition, class time will be spent on training to serve as Acolytes during our school worship services and on preparation for the High School entrance exams.
Classroom Expectations
Assignments– It is expected that all homework, projects, and in-class assignments will be completed and turned in on time. I understand the homework load that students carry, and will work hard to make sure that most assignments can be completed in-class, but there may be a few assignments to be completed at home.
Respect– The Bethany Honor Code which promises trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship is at the heart of all that we do. It is especially important in a class like this where we will be sharing personal opinions and covering sensitive subjects. Please respect your classmates and their opinions.
