Centering Prayer
11/13/2017
There is a lot of talk these days about the many benefits of "mindfulness." People of many different faiths and no faith are recognizing that we feel and function better when we can find a center of calm in the midst of busy lives. In the Christian Tradition one of the tools for tapping into a deep and abiding peace is an ancient practice known as Centering Prayer. I have found that taking time for this practice is an essential way for me to stay grounded in my identity as God's beloved child rather than any passing anxiety. If you already know about this practice, I encourage you to find time to make it part of your routine. If it is new to you, below is a brief explanation of how you might begin.
-Choose a one- or two-syllable word such as God, peace, love, stillness or faith. -Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Silently introduce the word as the symbol of your consent to allow God’s presence. -Repeat the word over and over, moving deeper and deeper within yourself. If the mind wanders, gently return to the word. -Rest and simply be with God “as if you put your head back down on the pillow after waking.” Sense the presence of God within you. -As your prayer ends, let go of the sacred word and rest your mind for a minute or two before going about your business. I hope you'll give it a try and you find yourself filled with a contagious calm!

PurposeI believe that there should be no separation between our spiritual lives and our everyday activities. There is no place that we can go that God is not...so, everything is spiritual! On this blog page I'll share thoughts of my own and links to various other signs of God's presence, activity, and love. ArchivesCategories |
